The People’s Briefing Room: Why It’s Time to End the WHCA's Stranglehold
If you needed any more proof that Washington elites think they own the place, look no further than the latest tantrum from the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) over the White House press office taking back control of the briefing room seating chart.
That’s right—for decades, this taxpayer-funded space has been controlled not by the American people, not even by the White House itself, but by a group of self-important, self-serving journalists who act like the briefing room is their private clubhouse.
Well, those days are over. And it’s about time.
The WHCA: Gatekeepers for the Media Elite
For years, the WHCA has operated as an exclusive club for left-wing legacy media outlets. They decide who sits where, who gets a prime spot, and who is shoved to the back or outright excluded.
Independent journalists, conservative outlets, and rising media voices?
Good luck.
The WHCA has long operated as a gatekeeper, ensuring that only their preferred "establishment-approved" voices have the best access to the White House press secretary.
This isn’t a conspiracy theory; it’s a fact.
The WHCA literally limits who can join their organization. They control access to becoming a member, making it incredibly difficult for independent journalists to get a seat at the table—or, in this case, literally a seat in the room.
And when the Biden administration, under Karine Jean-Pierre, revoked the hard passes of over 400 independent journalists, the WHCA didn’t say a word. Not one.
Think about that for a moment.
The supposed defenders of press access, the champions of "democracy dies in darkness," stood by silently while hundreds of reporters were stripped of their ability to hold the Biden White House accountable.
But of course, that’s because they aren’t interested in press freedom—they’re interested in protecting their own access and influence.
